Have you heard about an innovative new campaign aimed at putting pressure on world leaders to prioritise education for girls?
The Girls Count campaign, created by advocacy organisation ONE, is asking us to count every single one of the 130 million girls around the world who are currently being denied an education. Does this sound like a tall order? It’s actually much easier than you think…
All you need to do is visit the Girls Count website, pick a number and upload a photo of yourself. ONE are planning to make a video from all the photos and send it directly to the leaders who can bring about change. Apparently, if 130 million people pick a number, it will take eight years to watch the video! The world’s longest video will be very hard to ignore.
Poverty Is Sexist
Under the slogan ‘Poverty is Sexist’, Girls Count is already reverberating around the world. The premise of this campaign is the striking statement, ‘nowhere on earth do women have as many opportunities as men.’ Women in the poorest countries are at the greatest disadvantage but education can help break the cycle of poverty.
Educating girls in the world’s poorest countries is of crucial importance – each educated girl will have better health, more opportunities and be less at risk of becoming a child bride or experiencing violence.
Claim Your Number
The number one was claimed by Malala Yousafzai; other famous names such as Hugh Jackman and Bono have also taken part (you can see the gallery of all participants on the website).
At We Make Change we were keen to do our bit to help. So, as you can see, some members of our dynamic team have claimed their numbers!
It only takes a few seconds to take part. So what are you waiting for? Visit Girls Count right now and claim your number! Together we can ensure girls all over the world receive the education they deserve.
